Carver School

Math curriculum is designed to conform to national math education standards.  There is a focus on the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), as well as investigations into fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry, time, data analysis, statistics and probability, and algebra readiness.  At Carver School, the Bridges, Scott Foresman Math Series, and Mathscape Series are used to provide structured math instruction at various grade levels.  In order to ensure a well-rounded approach, the teacher draws from a variety of sources.  Skills are taught in a spiral approach, which means students are constantly reviewing and extending their knowledge through exposure to key ideas in a variety of contexts.  Some other key features of our math program include:

·        Problem solving for everyday situations

·        Automaticity with basic number facts and arithmetic skills

·        Practice through games

·        Sharing ideas through discussion

·        Cooperative learning

·        Projects

·        Daily routines

·        “Talking Math”, i.e. discussing differing methods of solving problems

·        “Writing Math” i.e. drawing and writing to explain a problem
